Statistical Analysis of a Three-dimensional Axial Strain and Axial-shear Strain Elastography Algorithm. (August 2011) Mohan Li, B.S., University of Science and Technology of China Chair of Advisory Committee: Dr. Raffaella Righetti Pathological phenomena often change the mechanical properties of the tissue. Therefore, estimation of tissue mechanical properties can be of clinical importance. Ultrasound elastography is a well-established strain estimation technique. Until recently, mainly 1D elastography algorithms have been developed. A few 2D algorithms have also been developed in the past. Both of these two types of technique ignore the tissue motion in the elevational direction, which could be a significant source of decorrelation in the RF data. In this thesis, a 3D elastography algorithm that estimates all the three components of tissue displacement is implemented and tested statistically. In this research, displacement fields of mechanical models are simulated. RF signals are then generated based on these displacement fields and used as the input of elastography algorithms. To evaluate the image quality of elastograms, absolute error, , and are computed. The , and values are investigated not only under different strain conditions, but also in different frame locations, which forms 3D strain filters. A statistical comparison between image qualities of the 3D technique and 2D technique is also provided.

Visualization of bonding at an inclusion boundary using axial-shear strain elastography: a feasibility study.
Ultrasound elastography produces strain images of compliant tissues under quasi-static compression. In axial-shear strain elastography, the local axial-shear strain resulting from application of quasi-static axial compression to an inhomogeneous material is imaged. The overall hypothesis of this work is that the pattern of axial-shear strain distribution around the inclusion/background interfac...

In axial-shear strain elastography, the local axial-shear strain resulting from the application of quasi-static axial compression to an inhomogeneous material is imaged. In this paper, we investigated the image quality of the axial-shear strain estimates in terms of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR(asse)) and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR(asse)) using simulations and experiments. Specifically, we ...

The technique of mapping the local axial component of the shear strain due to quasi-static axial compression is defined as axial shear strain elastography. In this paper, the spatial resolution of axial shear strain elastography is investigated through simulations, using an elastically stiff cylindrical lesion embedded in a homogeneously softer background. Resolution was defined as the smallest...

In this article we investigate the generation of shear strain elastograms induced using a lateral shear deformation. Ultrasound simulation and experimental results demonstrate that the shear strain elastograms obtained under shear deformation exhibit significant differences between bound and unbound inclusions in phantoms, when compared to shear strain images induced upon an axial compression. ...

In elastography we have previously developed a tracking and correction method that estimates the axial and lateral strain components along and perpendicular to the compressor/scanning axis following an externally applied compression. However, the resulting motion is a three-dimensional problem. Therefore, in order to fully describe this motion we need to consider a 3D model and estimate all thr...
